During the annual physical at your doctor's office you'll get a hammer to the knee and, if all's well, your lower leg will kick like a mule - this is the sign your Patellar Tendon (and a whole bunch of other things) is working perfectly. The patella is a triangular piece of bone which along with the femur and tibia, forms the knee joint. It is essentially floating though held in alignment by the Quadriceps Tendon and the Patellar Tendon plus some other well placed ligaments. It's role is to protect the knee joint and allow extension of the knee and injuries to it, or the surround tendons and ligaments, simply aren't fun.

It is an over use injury from repetitive overloading which results in micro tears which exceed the body's healing mechanism unless the activity is stopped. Often called Jumper's Knee it can in fact affect people across all sports and should be addressed at the onset of problems.

Typical symptoms include:
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Instability
  • Locking
And the pain may:
  • Initiallybe present only as you begin physical activity or just after an intense workout
  • Progressto the point that it interferes with your sports performance
  • Eventually interfere with daily tasks such as climbing stairs or getting up from a chair
